Kratom Drug Test: What you should know
There is no doubt that kratom is increasingly becoming popular because of the many health benefits associated with this herbal plant. However, it is also surrounded by many controversies. It is being used as a replacement for opioid drugs, and hence there are lots of questions arising whether it has the same effect as of the drug.
The FDA and the DEA have already placed kratom as a harmful substance, due to some of the adverse effects that might incur through its use. So, how long does kratom stay in your system? Here is all the important information you need to know about this herb, and the results that might pop up from the drug test.
What is the time taken for kratom strains to become active?
When you use kratom, normally the effects begin to pour in within 15 minutes. A small dose of kratom can produce an effect that can last up to 2 hours, whereas with a high dose, the effects might last for up to 8 hours. If you want the potent effects to last for around 2 hours, you need a dose of 4 to 5 grams, and for having up to 8 hours of effectiveness, you will have to use 7 to 8 grams of kratom.
The maximum effect or peak effect of kratom are believed to remain between 1 ½ and 2 ½ hours after using it. The effects are increased when you use it on empty stomach. On the other hand, is someone eats before taking the strain, the effects might not kick-in for an hour, or so.
Moreover, if someone consumes kratom capsules, it might take some time for feeling the effects, because it has to be dissolved in the stomach first. The quality of the kratom also plays an important role in achieving the effects. Therefore, the higher the quality of the strains, the faster will be the effects.
How long does kratom stay in your system?
The exact duration for kratom to remain in your system is not properly understood, as of now. That’s because the herb is yet to be clinically tested on certain research labs, and for this reason, it is extremely difficult to find out for how long the strains would remain in your body.
Some studies have indicated that kratom might have a half-life of about 24 hours. That means, around 50% of the alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine, will take an entire day to leave your body. Hence, for the total elimination of the substance from your body, a minimum of two days will be required.
However, the studies show that the duration might even extend depending on the dosage, and how frequently you are using it. That also means, if you are using low doses, the alkaloids will leave your system pretty fast. Some other factors which might determine the duration of kratom in your body include the following.
Age – It is seen that a mature person takes a long time for eliminating kratom from their system, as compared to the young users. However, it is the same as kratom and other substances. The elderly people will take longer half-life as that of younger ones with most of the substances as usual.
That’s because of physical changes, renal function, and the usage of other medications. Therefore, it might be concluded that if you are above 65 years of age, it will take some time for the kratom to leave your body, compared to a younger person.
Fats present in the body – Another important aspect that can play a huge role in eliminating the alkaloids from your system, is the body fat. The alkaloid mitragynine is fat-soluble. That means if you have a higher percentage of fats in your body, it is very likely that kratom would stay in your metabolism longer than people with low body fats.
When you have low body fats, your body will excrete kratom more easily, and quickly. That’s because kratom won’t get stored within the fats.
Taking kratom with other substances – If you are taking kratom along with other substances, such as alcohol, your system will take a longer time to flush out kratom from your system. The reason is that, when you use alcohol and kratom, your body starts to metabolize alcohol first, and then kratom.
And because of this, kratom will stay much longer in your system. On such occasions, you need to consult a physician if you are under some medications. That will not only help you in finding any issues about the kratom staying in your body but if it is safe for using the two substances.
Water and food intake – If you always stay hydrated, it will help you to remove kratom from your system much faster through urine. Also, when you use kratom with meals rich in fats, it could help in faster absorption, and naturally, all the things will be processed quickly including removal of the strains, as well.
Some other factors which can play an important role in the duration of kratom stay in your system, includes your urinary pH, metabolic rate, and renal function. Although these aren’t only limited to kratom, it is with other substances too.
How long does kratom stay in your system also depends on the kind of kratom strains you are using. There are differences in the alkaloid levels of different strains, and some studies indicate that the kratom strains from Southeast Asian countries have rich amounts of alkaloids. Whereas, the ones that are grown on locations outside the Southeast Asian countries or in greenhouses, consists of lower amounts of alkaloids.
What are the chances of kratom showing up on drug tests?
Kratom doesn’t show up on 5-panel drug tests like SAMHSA-5, and NIDA-5. The 20-panel drug tests don’t look out for kratom, and hence it can’t be detected. However, some labs have developed new drug panels tests, which specializes in detecting kratom.
There are reports that some territories within the US send samples for screening out kratom. For instance, New Jersey courts submit samples for the screening of kratom, which are used in convicting criminal offenses. Here are some of the other types of kratom drug tests.
Kratom blood test – This type of test is conducted not only to find the presence of kratom, but also to find out the amount of strain that was consumed, and its concentration levels. However, the blood test has a narrow window for detecting kratom. It is seen in many cases that kratom doesn’t show up in the tests after several days of ingestion. As a matter of fact, the blood test is considered invasive, and it is avoided by many organizations.
Kratom urine test – The alkaloids found in kratom might show up on certain types of urine tests. Whether you are taking kratom frequently or low doses, urine tests will be able to find out traces of kratom after using it for over a week, or so.
Kratom hair test – So far there haven’t been any reports of hair tests, and there are no theories that show kratom could be found in hair follicles.
Kratom saliva test – There isn’t any information about performing the saliva tests for finding kratom, but there are possibilities that kratom might be detected through this test.
You might consider starting exercising if you consumed kratom, and want to flush out of your system. You can also take Calcium-D-Glucarate, eat acidic foods, or using activated charcoal to get kratom out of your system.
